Slight increase in air conditioning setting and dimming of external lights at regional malls will save 35 tons of CO2
City Centre Beirut, part of Majid Al Futtaim, and leading fashion, social, leisure destination in the city, celebrated the Earth Hour initiative through turning off the lights in the Mall and through a premiere innovative digital and onsite initiative, to raise awareness about the importance of reducing energy consumption.
On March 19th, 8 p.m. and part of the global and regional initiative, City Centre Beirut turned off the lights in the mall for 5 minutes in a step to reduce one-time energy consumption and reinforce its commitment to promoting a sustainable environment. Media, Customers and tenants gathered to watch an extravagant performance by a talented contortionist performing on the globe while the lights were turned off and glow in the dark bracelets were distributed to all attendees.
Sleiman Mallat, Senior Mall Manager – City Centre Beirut, declared in special live interviews with local TV stations: “Sustainability is at the core of Majid Al Futtaim vision and we strive to promote it in all our activities. City Centre Beirut is the first and only mall to be awarded LEED Gold Certificate in Beirut and organizing the Earth Hour today proves once again that we are an active member in the community and we try to raise awareness on key causes that would help secure a better environment for them and their kids.” He added: “We have been organizing the Earth Hour in previous years yet tonight, it’s a special celebration with switching out the lights of our website in a creative move to reach a wider audience online and the beautiful glow in the dark entertainment shows”.
For the second consecutive year, City Centre Beirut is supporting Earth Hour a concept that has expanded within 7,000 cities and towns worldwide, whereas “Majid Al Futtaim” participates for the sixth year in this annual event. By diming and switching off lights for one hour, along with setting the malls temperature at a standard 24 degrees, Majid Al Futtaim shopping malls will avoid the emission of 35 tons of CO2, demonstrating the major impact of slight modifications in energy usage. The company’s sustainability experts estimate that up to $10,000 in energy consumption could be saved in Earth Hour 2016.
